Five styles for creating an inviting room

Whether your home has a formal, dedicated room for dining or you have an open concept, multifunctional layout for casual entertaining, window treatments are key for anchoring the space while also providing natural light control. When it comes to options for covering windows in the dining room, pretty much anything goes, based on your taste. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the styles available, starting with drapery.

Drapery

You might think that drapery works best in a formal dining area, but drapery works just as well in a more relaxed space. Its long, flowing fabric is a great way to add softness, texture and color to a room (especially when layered with blinds or shades). Plus, the sky’s (almost) the limit when it comes to choices. You’ll find drapery in an incredible array of fabrics; plus, you can customize drapery by pleat style, level of fullness and hardware. And for a finishing touch, order fabric by the yard to create complementary accents.

Roman Shades

An eye-catching way to pull a dining room together, Roman shades are extremely versatile. They can add a hint of refinement while still complementing a laid-back space. Available in a host of colors and patterns, Roman shades come in full or flat folds and in rolling or stacking styles. For a clean, crisp appearance, look for Roman shades without exposed cords. Also keep in mind that in general, Roman shades insulate well, with room-darkening fabrics blocking heat gain from strong, sunny rays.

Woven Wood Shades

Made from natural materials such as bamboo, grasses, reeds and jute, woven wood shades add an organic look at the window. They’re also an ideal complement to wood dining room furniture or rattan accents. Woven wood shades offer varying levels of privacy and light control, depending on the fabric weave. If you desire less light filtering and more privacy, you might want to add a liner to you shades. You’ll find woven wood shade options with attached liners as well as options with liners that operate independently from the shade.

Shutters

If you’re looking to add a classic elegance to your dining room, you can’t go wrong with shutters, which are available in everything from genuine hardwood and vinyl to composite. The material you choose for your dining room shutters all depends on the look you want and the demands of the space. If you want a timeless, enduring style, then opt for genuine hardwood—just make sure to select options where the wood is manufactured from sustainably harvested forests.

Vinyl shutters are ideal if you live where it’s hot and humid. Shop for styles that are UV and water resistant, to withstand your climate’s conditions. Composite shutters are a good choice if you love hardwood, but you also want something that stands up to the boundless energy of kids and four-legged pets.

Sheer Shades

For dining rooms that overlook gorgeous views, sheer shades beautifully diffuse natural light while still allowing you to see outside and maintaining your privacy. They also provide UV protection to keep furniture, flooring and artwork from fading. If you have tall windows in your dining room, consider sheer vertical panels, which are like a combination of sheer shades and blinds.

Motorized Control

Once you’ve selected a type of window treatment, you’ll need to decide on manual versus motorized control. With smart motorization, you can open and close adjust window treatments with a remote, an app, automatically through custom schedules you create, and with your voice and your favorite voice assistant. (One note: motorization for shutters provides tilt-only control.) Smart, motorized window treatments in your dining room make it easy to create the perfect ambiance, whether you’re entertaining a group of friends or having a quiet dinner for two.

Having motorized control also enhances security; you can schedule window treatments to automatically adjust, giving your home a lived-in look while you’re away. You can enjoy better energy efficiency, too, because you can schedule window treatments to open or close, to keep interiors warmer or cooler depending on the season.
